The spectacular coastline of Berwickshire and North Northumberland is well known for its dramatic scenery and abundant wildlife and much of it is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  What is less known is that this magnificent scenery continues offshore and is home to a dazzling array of colourful marine life.

The North Sea often appears to be forbidding, steely grey and stormy.  However, beneath the waves there is a wealth of hidden natural treasures.  The shallow sea along the Berwickshire and North Northumberland coast is the location of a remarkable rocky reef which forms a magical seascape teaming with fascinating sea creatures.  Due to the importance of these waters to wildlife, the 150km stretch of coast (which includes the Farne Islands and Lindisfarne) is protected as a European Marine Site.  The abundance of marine life and clarity of the water makes this site popular with divers and for this reason, waters around St Abb's Head and Eyemouth have also been made a Voluntary Marine Reserve.
