Work is well underway on the England Coast Path - a new National Trail around all of England’s coast. Natural England expects to complete work on the England Coast Path in 2020.

In Northumberland, the section from South Bents (South Tyneside) to Amble has been through the public consultation stage and once approval has been given by the Defra Secretary of State. work will begin on implementing the route on the ground.  Natural England's team are working on the other two sections, Amble to Bamburgh and Bamburgh to Scottish Border and hope to publish their proposals for consultation by summer 2018.

Northumberland County Council's countryside team and Northumberland Coast AONB Partnership staff have worked with Natural England throughout the process.

The overview of progress map below shows:

  • the stretches that Natural England is currently working on
  • the stretches that are open
  • when work on new stretches is likely to start

The new right of access will be brought into effect at different times around the coast.
