The Defra-funded Farming in Protected Landscapes programme will be open for applications from July 2021.
Protected Landscapes - our National Parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty - are special and unique places. They are living, working landscapes that also support a huge range of habitats and species, and they are enjoyed by millions of people every year. By supporting the farmers, land managers and people who live and work in these areas, we can help protect these exceptional places and support local communities.
This is a programme of funding for one-off projects covering these areas of work, not an agri-environment scheme. The programme is part of Defra’s Agricultural Transition Plan. It has been developed by Defra with the support of a group of AONB and National Park staff from across the country.
You can find details of the programme in the Guidelines for Applicants (below), but the main points are also summarised on these webpages.

Seventy five percent of the Northumberland coast is a farmed landscape so all AONB farmers have a significant role to play in the conservation and enhancement of the AONB’s landscape for future generations.
The AONB Partnership asked local farmland conservation advisor Harry Baker Cresswell to look at how farmers in and close to the AONB might best place their holdings to take full advantage of the new agri-environment schemes and more widely the principle of farmers providing ‘Public Goods’.
Harry has used case studies for three different farms across the AONB to demonstrate how using the Natural Capital approach could be beneficial in the future for land managers.

National Parks England have been leading work to produce a publication to mark the one year anniversary of the FiPL programme. The publication helps demonstrate the outcomes delivered through FiPL and it captures very well the wide range of projects that the programme is delivering.
