Northumberland Coast AONB Management Plan
Local Authorities have the primary responsibility for the conservation and enhancement of AONBs.
The duty under section 89 of the CRoW Act, to produce a plan giving policies for the management of the area, also falls on the Local Authorities for the area covered by the designation.
Although the plan is specifically for the Council to set out its policies and how it will carry out its functions, it will also help other public bodies to fulfil their obligations by clearly setting out the special qualities of the AONB and the sort of changes and pressures that could harm these.
More widely, it will be of interest and value to any organisation whose work is within or could affect the AONB.
2020-2024 AONB Management Plan
A new Management Plan for the Northumberland Coast AONB has been adopted by Northumberland County Council, covering the period 2020-2024 and can be downloaded below.
This has not been an easy time to review the Management Plan; many of the most important influences on the area such as agri-environment policy are under review as the UK leaves the European Union, and the Government's response to the wide-ranging recommendations of the Glover Review of National Parks and AONBs is still awaited. Consequently this has been a light-touch review, while we wait for potentially significant changes over the next few years. The Government's response to the Glover Review is expected in the autumn and this could mark a significant change in the resourcing and status of AONBs, so we keenly await further details.
